COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)— The Truist Foundation awarded the Big Red Barn Retreat a $25,000 grant towards funding the Warrior PATHH program for Veterans and First Responders.

Located in Blythewood, the BRBR provides nonclinical services, trainings, and programs to over 2,5000 active-duty service members, veterans, and first responders struggling with combat-related stress.

Approximately 40% of South Carolina’s veterans and first responders struggle with mental health challenges.

Officials say The Warrior PATHH program is the only proven program in South Carolina to help facilitate post-traumatic growth.

In a release, South Carolina Regional President for Truist Mike Brenan says, “As citizens, we recognize and admire the selflessness and sacrifices that service members, veterans and first responders make on our behalf. However, we can take for granted the emotional and psychological toll they face through their service…”

During the program, participants are immersed in a seven day residential peer-based training, followed by three months of support, and daily training from a team of combat veterans and first responders.

A 18 month study of the program found participants experienced a reduction in depression, insomnia, and anxiety due to post-traumatic stress.
