COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — To many, he’s one of the greatest pitchers to ever grace the mound at Carolina Stadium. Wednesday, we spent time with Michael Roth learning about life as a star at USC. Roth currently holds the record for the most innings pitched at the College World Series, it’s a long way from his days as a Freshman when he says Coach Tanner may have had some doubts. “I’ll tell you a funny story, my second day of innersquads as a Freshman, he looked at me and he goes, “Roth, you’re never gonna touch the mound for me, I don’t know why you’re throwing,” says Michael Roth, former USC Pitcher. That would all change in 2010 when he led the Gamecocks to their first ever National Title, he would do it again in 2011. But in 2012, he ended his run in the 7th inning of the second game in a best of three series against Arizona. “Coach Meyers came out earlier and said if you get another double play ball, here you know we’ll be good to go and I got my ground ball, the ball just stuck right in my palm and it hopped out of the glove,” says Roth. Moments later Price would take over. “I knew that was the last time I’d run off the mound in a Carolina uniform,” says Roth. While his days wearing the Carolina uniform are over, the future is only starting. “I know baseball isn’t always going to be there,” says Roth. Roth came back to USC as a senior to earn a degree in International Business. “I’m working on finding an internship in the fall,” says Roth. But his days of studying aren’t over just yet. “I definitely want to go to Grad School, hopefully at Carolina,” says Roth. He also still has playing time on the field and while he says he isn’t sure about the next five years or even the next five days, he does have a goal. “To be a loving father, to be a loving husband and to chase after Jesus,” says Roth. “I don’t like following in people’s footsteps type of deal, I wanna do something, come up with something,as cliche as it may sound, change the world,” says Roth.
