ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WOLO)—Earlier this morning a lock down was lifted at SC State University following a reported sighting of a gun on campus.
Officials say campus police identified the person in question and determined “no live weapon was involved.”
In a press conference, SC State University President Alex Conyers said, “Earlier this morning an employee spotted a gentleman on campus with a weapon. She did exactly what we’ve asked all of our employees and students to do if you see something say something. She alerted campus police and they immediately issued a rave alert which placed the University on lock down for students, faculty, staff and visitors. At that time we began our investigation into exactly what was happening and I’m pleased to say today that everything worked out exactly like it should have.
University officials contacted Orangeburg Sheriff’s Department and the City of Orangeburg Department of Public Safety. They were able to ascertain that the weapon was a fake wooden weapon used by our ROTC department. The employee didn’t know it was a fake weapon.”
The campus was initially placed on lock down around 10:45 a.m. It was not lifted until the fake weapon was found.
