Dozens gather in SC to hear about work permits

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) — Dozens of people gathered on Hilton Head Island to hear about how a new Obama administration order on illegal immigrants could affect them.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports (http://bit.ly/Q1OWA5 ) more than 100 people gathered at a local church Sunday as attorneys explained the order in a session conducted in Spanish.

The order would allow illegal immigrants who arrived before age 16, who have lived here more than five years and who meet other requirements to get two-year work permits. Lawyers explained the permits do not grant permanent residency or citizenship.

Workers also must be in or have graduated from high school or have been honorably discharged from the military. They also cannot have been convicted of a felony or significant or multiple misdemeanors.
