SUMTER, S.C. (AP) — Investigators say the remains of an 18-year-old man last seen leaving a library in Sumter have been found on the side of a highway. A pathologist confirmed that the bones found by a man collecting cans were Aaron Abraham, who was last seen on security camera footage leaving the Sumter County Library on July 19 as it closed.
ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. (AP) — Several people had to be rescued from a flash flood and part of Interstate 95 was closed several hours yesterday near the North Carolina-Virginia line because of flooding. A creek sent water over I-95, closing the highway at Exit 173 for about seven hours. Traffic backed up for several miles. The interstate reopened around 3:30 p.m. yesterday.
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A suspended Democratic South Carolina lawmaker running unopposed is going to trial on tax evasion charges. State revenue officials claim Rep. Harold Mitchell didn’t file income taxes for 2005 through 2008 until he filed delinquent returns, and under-reported his income, in 2009. His lawyer says Mitchell thought he didn’t earn enough to file.
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley has given $29,000 in raises to her staff. But Haley’s spokesman says total compensation for her staff went down 9 percent because job responsibilities shifted and one position hasn’t been filled.
