COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — “This is good stuff, it’s what it’s all about,” says Dave Miller, fairgoer. At the South Carolina State Fair, if it’s fried and greasy it’s available. “This Italian sausage sub here, it’s probably only 10-12,000 calories. I”m trying to wathc my weight while I’m down here and get something good to taste,” says Miller. Tasty, yes. But, how many calories are really in some of your fair favorites? Let’s start with the porkchop on-a-stick. That will cost you 300-400 calories. But, we’re told it’s all protein. How about the turkey leg? That’s anywhere from 1,200 – 1,500 calories. And those tasty corndogs dipped in the batter we all love? Anywhere from 400-1200 calories a piece. Crandall Sims reporting, “We all know the fair and fried foods go hand in hand. You may even want to try something like this Italian sausage, but there are healthier options like this Greek Salad. You may just have to look a little harder to find them.” “Yes, there are healthy options at the fair, we have tomatoes, squash, bell peppers,” says Frances Koon, Superintendent of Agriculture at the South Carolina State Fair. Just inside the Cantey building, you’ll find home grown South Carolina produce. “Let’s bring the Roadside Market and give you a little taste of what the farmers are actually growing here in South Carolina,” says Koon. And you can even take some home with you. “On their way out the door, they’ll stop in and get there bag and have their produce to take home,” says Koon. But, of course if you just can’t tell the goodies you can only find at the fair, no, there’s plenty to go around. “Oh yeah, probably some ice cream later to settle the stomach down. Mix the grease up with the ice cream a little bit, get that rumbling that’s how you know you’re at the state fair,” says Miller.
