Woman Fatally Struck While Riding Her Bike to Work Identified

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — A woman killed while riding her bicycle to work Thursday morning has been identified.

Coroner Margaret Fisher said 31-year-old Erica Bass died after she was struck from behind by a vehicle traveling in the southbound lane of 12th Street exit between SCANA Highway and Saxe Gotha Road just before 7 a.m.

Bass was pronounced dead at the scene from the injuries she sustained in the accident.

An autopsy showed that she died as a result of upper body trauma.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to an area hospital, officials say.

Her condition is unknown at this time.

The West Columbia Police Department, the South Carolina Highway Patrol, and the Lexington County Coroner’s Office are investigating the accident.
