Sculpture of Gen. Peter Horry being unveiled

CONWAY, S.C. (AP) — A sculpture of Revolutionary War leader Peter Horry is being unveiled in Conway.

Horry County leaders, historians and representatives of the local historical society are attending the unveiling Monday in the atrium of the Horry County Government Center.

Horry was a planter of French Huguenot descent born in 1747. He served as a lieutenant colonel in the Revolutionary War under Francis Marion and later was a brigadier general in the state militia.

Horry served both in the South Carolina House and Senate. What was then Kingston County was renamed as the Horry District in his honor in 1801. In 1868, the district became Horry County.

Horry died in 1815 and is buried at Trinity Episcopal Church in Columbia.
