Berkeley Co. Deputy Shot; 1 Suspect Dead, Another Sought
GOOSE CREEK, S.C. (WCIV) – A Berkeley County sheriff’s deputy was shot early Friday morning while attempting to make an arrest, and law enforcement agencies confirm an armed standoff with one of the suspects has ended.
The suspect was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound but Chief Deputy Mike Cochran announced around 8:30 a.m. that they are looking for a second suspect.
The wounded deputy has not been identified, but Chief Deputy Mike Cochran with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office confirmed shortly before 4 a.m. Friday it is a female deputy. Cochran said at the time the deputy was undergoing surgery at a local hospital and was in stable condition.
The sheriff’s office has not identified the accused shooter, but law enforcement agencies had located and were in an armed standoff with the suspect at a home off of Durant Avenue in North Charleston, according to the North Charleston Police Department. That standoff ended around 7 a.m.
The initial incident happened off of Redbank Road in Goose Creek shortly after midnight, after the deputy had made a traffic stop, according to the sheriff’s office.
Cochran says the deputy was shot when a fight broke out between her and the suspect as she tried to make the arrest.
Cochran did not say on what charges the suspect was being arrested, or what led to the initial traffic stop.
Multiple law enforcement agencies are responding, including the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), the North Charleston Police Department, and the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.
Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office officials released a statement on social media.
