Wolves fall to Wingate on Senior Day
NEWBERRY – The Newberry Football team fell to the Bulldogs of Wingate this afternoon 21-17 on their senior day at Setzler Field.
Sophomore Jy Tolen had a season-high 15 completions for 109 yards. Tolen rushed for 39 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore running back had 79 yards on the ground and a touchdown. The Wolves ran for 108 yards against a Bulldog defense that gives up an average of 81 yards per game. Senior AJ Valentine had a team best 8 tackles on the afternoon. The Wolves defense got to Bulldog QB four times throughout the game. Colby Taylor added to his team lead in the sack total with a sack in the third quarter. Craig Barksdale had a half sack and a QB rush on the afternoon. KeSean Glover had a half sack and a pass break up.
In the first quarter, the Bulldogs struck first on their opening drive with a 14-touchdown pass to take a 7-0 lead. On the ensuing drive, the Wolves would go 12 plays for 75 yards with a Wright touchdown run from three yards out to tie the game up at seven.
Early in the second quarter, Kendrick Cox would pick off a Brooks Bentley pass and would return it to the Wingate 23. The Wolves would go three and out and take a 37-yard field goal off the leg of Bryce Earley to take a 10-7 lead. The Bulldogs would take a 14-10 lead into the half after a 24-yard touchdown run from Bentley.
Throughout the third quarter, the Wolves and Bulldogs would exchange punts before the Wolves would take a 9 play 64-yard drive that ended in a Tolen 25-yard touchdown off of a quarterback scramble to give the Wolves a 17-14 lead.
On the next drive, the Bulldogs would re-gain the lead on a 11 play 75 yard drive, ending in a seven- yard touchdown pass to make it 21-17. The Wolves attempt to score late fell short as the Bulldogs hold on to win 21-17.
With the Tusculum 29-27 win over Mars Hill in double-overtime, Newberry (4-6, 3-5 SAC) will travel to Mars Hill to take on the Lions next Saturday. Kickoff will be at 1:30 p.m. from Ammons Family Athletic Center & Meares Stadium.
