Watch: Lexington Coroner Reuniting Loved Ones With Property of Deceased
Lexington, S.C. (WOLO) — Since taking office in 2014 Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has made it her mission to return unclaimed items to loved ones of the deceased.
From cell phones and jewelry to fish tanks and cars, she says while the items might seem insignificant to some, they mean something to loved ones who have already lost so much.
Its been 8 years since Brittany Pownall’s best friend Samantha was killed in a car crash while wearing a very special piece of jewlery.
Pownall tells ABC Columbia, “My boyfriend at the time made a comment that we spent so much time together might as well be married so I gave her this ring and told her to wear it around they said it was lost in the accident.”
Lost, but not gone forever.
According to Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher, the ring was one of dozens of unclaimed personal effects at the coroner’s office.
The coroner explains, “We have some cases that go back all the way to the late 90’s and some of them all the way up to 2014.”
Fisher says her office has devoted countless hours researching and working to return the items to family members … writing letters, making calls and even enlisting social media.
She emphasizes, “We don’t know the circumstances but we want to get them back we want to return it to their rightful owners.”
When asked why the matter is a top concern, Fisher says the answer is simple, people like Brittany.
“Just seeing the look on her face that made the entire effort that we put in to getting these things back to these family, worth it.”
Efforts like these reunite loved ones with invaluable treasures.
