CHARLESTON, S.C. (WOLO) — A day to remember.

One year ago today parishioners gathered for a Bible study at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston.  They welcomed a stranger in their midst to sit and worship with them.  Investigators say that man, accused Charleston church shooter Dylann Roof, sat with the worshipers for close to an hour before opening fire and cutting nine lives far too short.

Thousand will gather in Charleston today to reflect on a day that shook our state and the nation, and to honor the lives of Reverend Daniel Simmons, Depayne Middleton Doctor, Senator Clementa Pinckney, Reverend Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, Susie Jackson, Tywanza Sanders, Ethel Lance, Myra Thompson and Cynthia Hurd.

A memorial service is set to start at 10:00 a.m. this morning at the College of Charleston TD Arena.   Tickets for that event are sold out.  Attendees are asked not to bring backpacks or large packages.   They will not be allowed to carry them inside of the arena.   All purses and handbags will be screened.   There will be a number of road closures at the event:
