Amazon’s Ring to shutter video-sharing program with police
(CNN)– Amazon’s Ring is shutting down its video-sharing program that’s popular with police.
It will no longer let police and other government agencies request doorbell camera video directly from users from within the company’s “Neighbors” app.
Instead authorities seeking videos must now submit a formal legal request to the company.
Privacy advocates are hailing the move as a long-awaited victory for civil liberties.
Ring’s decision to wind down on the video-sharing program called “Request for Assistance” has nationwide implications.
A consumer advocacy group says hundreds of law enforcement agencies have struck up partnerships with ring.
The partnerships can help shed light on local crimes.
But critics say they’re invasive, creepy and threaten citizen rights.
