A couple hundred people came Saturday to the South Carolina State House for a local rally as part of the national Guns Across America event. Thousands more attended a gun and knife show at Columbia’s Jamil Temple.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina man is getting his Purple Heart back, almost 70 years later, thanks to its discovery at a Columbia antique store. Ninety-year-old George Hemphill got the award for fighting in World War II. He mailed it home and never asked about it again. A man bought it in 2000 in the antique store and held on to it until he got in touch with Purple Hearts Reunited.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Utah Supreme Court has refused to stay a lower decision ordering the adoptive parents of a 2-year-old girl to give her to the biological father in South Carolina. Attorneys for father Terry Achane say Friday’s ruling paves the way for him to take custody. The child was placed for adoption without Achane’s consent or knowledge.

ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) —Winthrop University’s chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity has been barred from holding campus events as police investigate hazing complaints.
