Columbia, S.C. (WOLO) — Technology plays a part in almost every aspect of our lives, but the South Carolina sun can cause permanent problems for high price electronics.

“Each device has a range that it wants to operate comfortably. Once it goes past that bad things happen,” says Anwar Robertson, owner of Mr.PC.

As summer temperatures soar the tech wizard is seeing more and more gadgets with heat related issues.

He continues,  “iPhones, iPads that have been sitting in the car and they’ve been sitting for a long time. A device can function when it’s on up to about 95 degrees and when it’s off maybe until about 125 before it starts having problems.”

While made to withstand high temps, Roberston explains that devices are no match for the extreme heat of famously hot Columbia, especially the smaller ones like cell phones and tablets.

“Because these devices are so small you can’t fit a fan in there. It’s only choice is to push the heat out through the case  The only alternative they have is to shut down to cool themselves off.”

Many electronics power themselves off in high heat but that doesn’t prevent long term damage.

However, Robertson tells ABC Columbia most common mistake he sees is consumers using AC to cool down their devices.

He adds, “That cold air hits the hot air hits the hot air and eventually the system stops running. We get it 6 or 7 months later and the thing is rusted on the inside.”

Keeping gadgets out of direct sunlight and un-airconditioned cars is your best bet.

The store owner says, “All it takes is one little chip that does one important thing on the board that thing overheats and that device is done.”
