Officials Discuss How to Protect Manatees in South Carolina

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) – A meeting is being held to discuss now the public can help protect endangered manatees along the South Carolina coast.
News outlets report that state Department of Natural Resources officials and state Rep. Chip Limehouse of Charleston will be hosting the meeting Tuesday in North Charleston.
The meeting comes after two manatees were found dead in the Charleston areas last week. One was killed after being struck by boat propellers. The cause of death of the other manatee has not been determined.
Manatees swim in shallow tidal waters feeding on algae and grasses where they run the risk of boat collisions. Officials estimate about 50 manatees migrate to South Carolina coastal waters each summer.
