First Presidential Debate: Hot Topics & Highlights
ABC News– It was a war of words for the first debate between Presidential candidates at Hofstra University. The night started off with a hand shake between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, but it didn’t take long for attacks to fly. They tackled some current events like race relations, the role of police and homeland security.
The question of Trump saying Clinton doesn’t have the “stamina” to be president was also mentioned. Clinton fired back, saying that as secretary of state she traveled to 112 countries, negotiated peace deals, cease-fires and imprisoned dissidents. Clinton said once Trump can do that, “He can talk to me about stamina.” Trump, quickly respond, “Hillary has experience, but it’s bad experience. We have made so many bad deals during the last … so she’s got experience, that I agree. But it’s bad, bad experience.”
Taxes were also discussed during the first debate. Hillary Clinton says maybe Trump hasn’t released his tax returns because he doesn’t want to show that he’s paid “nothing” in federal income taxes. Trump responded to the tax question, once again saying that he can’t release his tax returns because he is being audited. Clinton reminded Trump that an audit doesn’t prevent one from releasing tax info. Trump then responded, “I will release my tax returns against my lawyer’s wishes when she releases her 33,000 emails that have been deleted. As soon as she releases them … I will release my tax returns.”
The candidates’ next face-off will take the form of a town meeting in St. Louis, MO. It will air on ABC Columbia October 9th, starting at 9:00 p.m.
