Experts explain hundreds of dead fish floating in Congaree
Columbia, S.C. (WOLO)–We have an answer after a viewer spotted something unusual in the Congaree river near the Edventure Children’s Museum.
Don Vargo sent us these pictures of hundreds of dead fish floating in the river.
We checked in in with the Congaree River Keeper and officials there say this is something called a “fish kill”.
Bill Stangler with Congaree River keeper says, “Fish kills can happen for a number of reasons, including pollution issues or natural conditions. In this instance the fish are threadfin shad, which are migrating up the rivers by the thousands right now. The fish can get into an area at high-water and when the water level drops so does the oxygen, resulting in the unfortunate result.”
You can report fish kills to SCDNR here: https://www.dnr.sc.gov/
or DHEC here: https://scdhec.gov/
