COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– Governor Henry McMaster is part of a group of Republican governors opposing two proposals under negotiation that they say gives the World Health Organization unconstitutional powers over states’ response to health crisis.

The 50 nation agreements would allow a coordinated worldwide response in the event of another global pandemic.

In a letter to president Joe Biden, Gov. McMaster and the other governors say the treaties erode state sovereignty and give the WHO secretary the authority to make unilateral healthcare decisions for millions of American citizens.

The governors state that “if adopted, these agreements would seek to elevate the WHO from an advisory body to a global authority in public health. Under the proposed amendments and treaty, the WHO’s Director-General would supposedly gain unilateral power to declare a ‘public health emergency of international concern’ (PHEIC) in member nations, extending beyond pandemics to include a range of perceived emergencies.”
