City leaders say new $20 million project will make it easier to access, enjoy riverfront
COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — New plans are underway to improve riverfront access in Columbia’s downtown area.
Leaders with the City of Columbia say their new Williams Street Extension Project has one primary goal — to make it easier for Columbia’s citizens and visitors to enjoy the view.
“We really haven’t been able to capitalize on a lot of the opportunities that are there, this is really the first step in really unveiling that whole platform and being able to capitalize on the natural beauty of the Midlands,” says Assistant Manager with Columbia Water, Clint Shealy.
Set to break ground in the Spring of 2025, the 1st phase of the project will include 4,700 feet of new and improved roadways and sidewalks parallel to the river between Gervais and Blossom Streets.
Around 16 of the $20 million project is funded by the State of South Carolina. The other $4.6 million comes from Richland County’s Transportation Penny.
And while leaders say phases two and three are only conceptual at this point, they have big ideas for the future.
“This is the Congaree and the confluence of all of our rivers. Absolutely, other cities who are like us and similarly situated and have these natural spaces, they have used them in a way where because they know people want to be around that — they enjoy that. And so I absolutely think there will be retail, restaurants, a public park is envisioned, that is part of the project ultimately and then with the USC investments and all the connectivity, it’s gonna be extra special for sure,” says City Manager Teresa Wilson.
Shealy says there are nearly 60 undeveloped acres being planned out with plans including electric charging stations, and bike share options as well.
