COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) – A bill legalizing medical marijuana could be facing some changes as it gains support in the State House.

A house panel voted 3-0 on Tuesday after hearing dozens of stories from patients and their family members. The testimonies detailed how marijuana can relieve suffering from chronic pain, severe epilepsy, PTSD and other ailments.

The bill’s sponsor, Republican Senator Tom Davis held as educational forum Tuesday night, with researchers from USC, in an effort to explain the science behind the plant.

The bill’s critics say the proposal asks the state to support a street drug to treat nearly everything.

The bi-partisan SC Compassionate Care Act now heads to the full House Medical, Military and Municipal Affairs Committee for review.

On Thursday, Grace Joyal’s exclusive series diving into this issue continues, with a visit inside the lab of USC Vice President for Research, Dr. Prakash Nagarkaati.
