Ford’s campaign accused of adult store spending

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — State Sen. Robert Ford may be fighting for his political career as his fellow senators decide if he violated ethics laws.

Senators heard four of the eight allegations against the Charleston Democrat on Thursday, including whether he illegally spent campaign money at two adult stores.

Ford says the items were gag gifts for campaign staffers. Senators asked him to produce receipts or other evidence when they meet again Friday to hear the rest of the allegations.

Ford is accused of using campaign donations for personal expenses and failing to report numerous expenses, donations and personal loans.

Ford’s lawyer says the problems were just sloppy bookkeeping.

If senators determine Ford violated the law, he could be reprimanded, fined or expelled from the Senate. The findings could also be sent to prosecutors.
