Fireflies face Legends Thursday night
ABOUT WEDNESDAY’S DOUBLEHEADER: The Fireflies split their doubleheader against the Charleston RiverDogs.
- Game 1: Columbia recorded its seventh shut-out win thanks to a tremendous performance on the mound from Jordan Humphreys. The righty pitched 7 innings, logged 10 strikeouts and the Fireflies won, 3-0. It’s the 5th time this year the 20-year-old has recorded 9+ strikeouts in an outing. Andres Gimenez had two hits and extended his on-base streak to 17 games.
- Game 2: The RiverDogs got revenge with a 10-5 win in the second matchup. The action was called after five innings due to rain and went down as a completed game. Tim Tebow collected his seventh multi-hit game of the year.
GLOWING: Michael Paez continues to be the bright spot in Columbia’s lineup. The infielder holds a .429 batting average over his last 10 games (12 hits & 6 runs). Paez is fourth in the league in extra-base hits and leads the Fireflies with 13 doubles.
SHARP GLOVES: The Fireflies are tied for the third best fielding percentage in the league – .975%. Luis Carpio has played 39 games in the infield with only four errors. Gene Cone has not committed an error in the outfield in his 39 contests.
FAMILIAR PLACE: When Gene Cone was with the Gamecocks last season, he played a three-game series in Lexington against the Kentucky Wildcats (May 6 to May 8). The outfielder’s historic 31-game hit streak came to an end on May 7 against the Wildcats. Cone finished with three hits in the series.
PAY CLOSE ATTENTION: Lexington’s Chris DeVito is a major threat at the plate. DeVito leads the South Atlantic League with 11 home runs and 38 RBIs. The first baseman had six hits and two of those were homers in the four-game series against the Fireflies in April.
