Addison Pointe Apartments set to open on Percival Road for low-income families

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — “Addison Pointe” — that’s the name of the newest affordable housing complex being built on Percival Road in Columbia by the United Way of the Midlands.

In partnership with Connelly Builders and Midlands Housing Trust Fund, the new Addison Pointe Apartments will provide 80 families across Richland County with affordable homes.

Sara Fawcett, CEO of United Way of the Midlands, says Addison Pointe will help those families with incomes ranging between 20% to 70% of the area median income of $55,000 in Richland County (annual incomes between around $11,000 and $38,000 a year) to have a quality and safe place to live.

“One of the things that you need to have if you’re going to be self-sufficient, is you have to have stable housing. If you’re not sure where you’re going to be moving to next, or make the rent this month, or where your kids are going to come home to school to, that’s extremely unsettling. And in order to be able to have that stable opportunity to increase your income and have a job with benefits, you have to start with a stable place to live,” says Fawcett.

Rent, she says, has increased by 32% in the past three years alone.

Addison Pointe aims to be a solution, with one, two, and three bedroom units priced between $250 and $1,100 a month, depending on the renter’s annual income.

Jeff Larimore, Executive Director of the Midlands Housing Trust Fund, says the road ahead to keep affordable housing at a level where people have choices remains a long one.

“We are a very dynamic region that’s drawing a lot of attention from other parts of the country and we need to make sure we’re prepared with appropriate housing stock. The trust fund is an integral tool to use for both developers, financial institutions, and governmental agencies that allow these type of transactions — such as Addison Pointe and others that have received tax credits throughout the state — to have the capability to get their projects off the ground,” says Larimore.

Part of the funding for the project also stems from author and philanthropist Mackenzie Scott — who gift to the United Way of the Midlands with $10 million.

Addison Pointe is set to open in the Fall of 2025.
