USC Fraternities Under Fire

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — University officials say 7 fraternities have been forced to delay rush week after allegations that the Greek organizations violated the code of conduct. According to Assistant Director of Greek Life Keith Ellison, some members of the organizations held socials and parties for some of the new recruits, some of them as young as 18, that included alcohol and in some cases even strippers. Students questioned the university’s decision to ban recruitment activities for all 18 USC fraternities when only 7 have been accused of misconduct. Those in attendance called the move unfair and biased. The Greek conduct board told students during the two hour open forum they initially put the freeze in effect because with allegations of misconduct. One board member said, “They did not feel comfortable with new members joining the organizations.” Vice President of Student Affairs Jerry Brewer says there is no definitive timeline for when rush activities among fraternal organizations might resume. Brewer says they will make a decision once they feel comfortable that each chapter is taking part in activities safe and responsibly.
