RCSD: 5 teens arrested in connection with January murder

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– Five teens have been arrested in connection to a murder that happened in January, says Sheriff Leon Lott.

According to RCSD, on January 28, around 9:30 p.m. deputies responded in the 1000 block of Miles Bowman Road in reference to two individuals being shot.

When deputies arrived to the scene, they found a 23-year-old man dead in the front passenger seat of a vehicle and a woman outside the vehicle with a gunshot wound in the upper body.

Deputies began providing lifesaving care to the female victim before EMS arrived to the scene and took her to a local hospital in critical condition.

The sheriff’s department says investigators were able to determine that there were four shooters who fired roughly 70 rounds into the vehicle.

Two of the shooters were identified as 19-year-old Peyton Kirby, and a 15-year-old.

On January 29, Richland County Sheriff’s Department’s Fugitive Task arrested Kirby and the 15-year-old suspect at his home.

Both Kirby and the 15-year-old are charged with murder, attempted murder, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

Kirby was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center and the 15-year-old was taken to the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ).

On January 31, the third shooter 17-year-old Jackson Layne was arrested in northeast Richland County, and charged as an adult with murder, attempted murder, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

Layne was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

On February 7, the fourth shooter, a 16-year-old, was taken into custody, and charged with murder, attempted murder, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

RCSD says he will be taken to DJJ also.

Additionally, a fifth person who is a 16-year-old has also been charged with obstruction in connection to the murder.

The investigation revealed that the shooting was a result of an altercation between the four murder suspects and the deceased victim at another location shortly before the shooting.

“It’s a tragedy. We have one young man that lost his life and four teens that won’t have a life anymore because they’re in jail charged with murder,” says Sheriff Lott.
