Tyler’s Travels: Skiing in South Carolina? You betcha – especially when you have the right boots
Tyler Ryan learned the importance of taking care of your feet, and how an insert can change your life - or at least legs
IRMO SC (WOLO) – The Tyler’s Travels Team spent the morning talking about snow skiing…Yes, it is fifty degrees, and yes it is South Carolina, but yes, we learned about skiing, or more specifically, boots and the importance of correct fitting boots. Board Certified Pedorthist and Master Boot Maker Mike Tambling explains that the majority of people who ski are wearing boots that are two sizes too big. This can cause the feet to move around in the boot, and not only cause pain and potential injury, but can also reduce the control you have over your skis.
Tambling, the Found of Southern Ski in Irmo, has been one one of the only Master Custom Boot Fitters on the east coast, and the only one south of D.C., says when boots are the proper fit, it will reduce our tendency to tighten the strap on the top of foot, which can cause numbness and pain. He says that when boots fit properly, they should fit snug around your foot, and allow you to tighten the strap around the top of the boot, which locks your lower leg in place with your foot, and give you stability.
Now I know what you are thinking – we really don’t have many ski slopes in South Carolina, but he points out that the East Coasts largest ski shop is in Orlando, so skiing or at least ski equipment is very popular even in the Palmetto State. He points out that having the proper gear, including the right boots, right size skis, and even a helmet will make the whole skiing process more comfortable, more enjoyable, and even more safe.
