Sumter Co., SC (WOLO) — The Sumter County Sheriff’s office has arrested a man accused of breaking in a home and attempting to sexually assault the woman inside. According to authorities, around 1 am Monday morning 18-year-old Markus Burroughs, Jr. broke into a Sumter County home in an attempt to commit criminal sexual conduct. Officials say they responded to the home after the female victim called deputies saying she woke up to find Burroughs in her bedroom trying to sexually assault her.

Authorities say Burroughs ran from the home before they arrived at which time deputies secured the home and began searching for him. The victim was taken by EMS to Prisma Health Tuomey. Investigators say after interviewing witnesses and gathering additional evidence they requested a search warrant for Burroughs.

Wednesday February 19, 2025 deputies executed the search warrant at Burroughs home along Fish Road in Dalzell and say they were able to take him into custody without incident. He remains behind bars at the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center where authorities say his bond has been denied.

Sheriff Anthony Dennis says he was incensed by the news of the attack, but grateful for the rapid response of the deputies saying,

“The privacy and peace of this home and family were taken away early Monday morning. This crime appears to be an isolated incident, but it is another reminder of the evil in our world. It should also remind criminals that the good people of Sumter County, along with our deputies, will not tolerate these evil acts and that we will pursue and bring to punishment everyone who threatens our community.”

This case remains under investigation.
