Cops investigate death of Richland County inmate

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Authorities are investigating the death of an inmate in the Richland County jail after an autopsy determined the prisoner died from a neck injury after being placed in a headlock.
Investigators said 58-year-old Matthew Green was found unconscious at the jail on Aug, 16, a few hours after he was arrested in Forest Acres on a public intoxication charge.
Authorities say Green was placed in the headlock by an officer while he was being booked. Green died at the hospital on Aug. 24.
The Richland County coroner’s office asked deputies to investigate Green’s death after an autopsy determined he died from an injury to his neck.
Deputies will send the results of their investigation to a prosecutor, who will determine if any charges should be filed.
