IRS-Certified Volunteers Ready to Help You File Your Taxes
VITA is Holding Two Events Soon
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)- The IRS officially began accepting tax returns Monday. One group wants to help you file your returns for free. The volunteer income tax assistance or VITA program has two events coming up to help people at no cost and make sure your taxes are done right.
VITA agents will be at Richland Library’s main branch on Assembly Street on Wednesday, January 31st from 2 to 5 p.m. to help people who have a household income of 66 thousand dollars or less.
But you have to hurry, the free spots are filling up. “We have about 30 appointment slots we have allotted. So far, all but four are taken. So it’s not too late, we have a few more spots left if they want to call the social works department and set an appointment,” said Jessica Grote with VITA of The Midlands. “If that’s not an option, we also have a free tax event this Saturday (February 3rd) at Cecil Tillis Community Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.”
So if you want to utilize VITA’s services, get your paperwork ready today. “Please remember to bring all your W2s and other income documents. If you have health insurance through the marketplace, remember to bring your 1095-A form, your photo ID and social security cards for you and everyone on your tax return and if you have it, a copy of last year’s return always helps,” said Grote.
The United Way has several ways for you to utilize VITA services if you cannot make it to Wednesday or Saturday’s events. Call 211 for a list of tax site around The Midlands. If you prefer to do your taxes yourself, online, for free, visit myfreetaxes.com.
