“A chaotic scene” — Columbia PD provides updates on deadly shooting at Lincoln Street Airbnb, say 3rd suspect still at large

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — The Columbia Police Department  held a press conference Sunday afternoon to provide updates on the deadly June 6th shooting at an Airbnb — located on the 2400 block of Lincoln Street.

According to police, four young adults — two men and two women — were shot during the incident, leaving one man dead. “Once again we’re standing here talking about another young life lost to gun violence,” says Chief Skip Holbrook.

Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford says 18-year-old Jayden Cavon Brackins was fatally wounded by multiple gunshot wounds at the 2408 Lincoln Street location, ruling it a homicide.

According to Chief Skip Holbrook, Friday morning shortly after 5:15 a.m., officers were patrolling the Elmwood Park neighborhood when they received a call of a car break-in from a neighbor, then another call upgraded to “shots fired with a person hit.”

When police arrived at the two-story residence, officers say they heard screams and forced their way into the home, encountering a “chaotic scene.” Officers say they found four young people shot multiple times. Officers say they rendered aid to those hurt, and detained others that were at the residence but uninjured.

Officers say they arrived to heavy smoke and gunpowder inside the residence, recovering over 30 shell casings from multiple weapons, including an assault style rifle.

According to Holbrook, a 15-year-old male was arrested Friday night, June 6th, and has been charge with armed robbery among other charges. The 15-year-old is being detained at the SC Dept. of Juvenile Justice.

Early Saturday morning on June 7th, 18-year-old Latrell Daniel Hughey was also arrested by Columbia PD and is being charged with murder, armed robbery, and other charges. Hughey is being detained without bond at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

Police are actively looking for a 3rd suspect, an unnamed 15-year-old male — who they say will be charged with murder, armed robbery, possession of a firearm, and other charges.  “We anticipate additional charges and additional arrests,” Chief Skip Holbrook.

All three of the other victims are Columbia residents — two women and a man,  all three between the ages of 17 and 18-years-old.

Holbrook says the three victims are in stable condition at a local hospital. Everyone at the home during the incident are “loosely acquainted with each other,” says Chief Holbrook.

Rutherford asks that anyone with any information on the shootings to call the Coroner’s Office at 803-576-1799 or the Columbia Police Department at 803-545-3500. “His family are reading these posts (on social media) that contain false information,” she says, adding for folks to “Be mindful of what you post on social media.”

Addressing the Airbnb aspect, Holbrook says the home is owned by Cornerstone Properties. The Columbia PD has issued their “intent to have the property listed as public nuisance.”

Chief Holbrook says the owner has been ordered to cease operations at the location as an Airbnb, and says the owner has been 100% cooperative from the beginning.

The Airbnb had no previous history with Columbia PD.

Holbrook says he believes the shooting was an isolated incident with no ongoing threat to the community.
