COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — “Something like this, draws a lot of attention to the area,” says Brian Newman, Columbia City Councilman and Chairman of the Bull Street Commission.

The Bull Street Commission boasts seven members representing the business community, local neighborhoods and historic preservationists.

The project will revamp 165 of 181 acres on the former state mental hospital campus.

Among the items on Monday’s agenda, a potential baseball stadium. According to the project agreement, Columbia is one of the best markets in the Southeast for a minor league baseball stadium.

The city is working to find a consultant for a feasibility study.

Also on the agenda, the Camp Asylum agreement, an archaeological dig is planned to uncover the long held secrets of the former P.O.W. camp that held Union officers during the Civil War.

The Smith’s Branch Opportunity was also mentioned. It involves the creek that runs through the property. Much of it is a closed-pipe system, officials are looking at the possibility of opening up to make it more of an amenity.

While, nothing was decided at Monday’s meeting, concerns were raised.

We expect to learn much more about the project at next month’s meeting.
