RCSD: Traffic stop leads to deputy involved overnight shooting

 

 

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)–  During a Tuesday afternoon press conference Richland County Sheriff’ Leon Lott said deputies were involved in an overnight shooting.

Sheriff Lott said the shooting happened at about 1 in the morning on Tuesday, September 30, when deputies tried to stop a car that was speeding at N. Main St and Meridian Dr.

Deputies said the vehicle refused to stop and a pursuit ensued.

Shortly afterwards, at Monticello and Ridgedale Street the suspect who was identified as 23-year-old Renardo Tyson, vehicle lost control and drove into a ditch.

As deputies were exiting their vehicle to approach Tyson, he immediately started shooting at deputies’ multiple times, according to RCSD.

All four deputies at the scene returned fire at the suspect, striking him multiple times.

Tyson was taken by EMS to a local hospital.

He is being charged with attempted murder x 4, unlawful taunt, torment, beat, strike, or administer drugs to a police dog, discharging a firearm into a vehicle while occupied, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a stolen pistol, reckless driving, and failure to stop for blue lights and siren.

Additionally, Tyson will be taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center after being discharged from the hospital.

The deputies involved in the shooting were Corporal Chaisson Porter who has been with RCSD for 9 years, Deputy John Walantas who has been with RCSD for 2 years, K-9 Specialist Bryan Hodge who has been with RCSD for 3 years, and K-9 Specialist Datron Washington has been with RCSD for 3 years, and previously worked with the Columbia Police Department.
