SC reports first flu-related death of 2025 season

Doctors With Prisma Health Say It's Time For Your Flu Shot

The South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) reported the first flu-related death of the 2025 season.

The individual was from the Lowcountry region and was the first of the season, which began on Sept. 28.

“Unfortunately, we see many deaths, hospitalizations and other serious complications of flu each year in our state,” State Epidemiologist and director of DPH’s Health Programs Branch Dr. Li nda Bell said. “Getting vaccinated against this disease is the best way to prevent severe illness and death, and I recommend that all of us who are able get our shot as soon as possible.”

DPH issued a reminder to South Carolinians about the seriousness of the illness, recommending that everyone six months of age or older get vaccinated.

Flu prevention is vital for those at increased risk of complications from the virus, including young children, pregnant women, people age 65 and older and those with chronic health conditions.

To protect against the flu, DPH recommends vaccination, frequent hand washing and staying away from others who are sick.

The body’s immune system takes about two weeks to respond to the flu vaccine for full protection, emphasizing the importance of getting vaccinated before the holidays, DPH said.

“Regardless of what this season will bring, we can be prepared for significant activity not only from the flu, but respiratory illnesses in general, to include COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV,” Dr. Bell said. “Just like with the flu, being vaccinated is the best protection against severe illness from COVID-19 or RSV. People should talk with their health care provider for detailed recommendations.”

DPH provides a weekly Flu Watch report published each Wednesday. To view the report, visit this link.
