Georgetown County women highlighted on cruise

GEORGETOWN, S.C. (AP) — A Woman’s History Month event is being held in Georgetown County highlighting the lives of prominent women from the county.

During a five-hour pontoon boat cruise scheduled for Tuesday on the Waccamaw and Pee Dee Rivers, historian Lee Brockington will discuss both famous and lesser-known women who contributed to the area in the past.

One of the most famous women from the area is Belle Baruch, who purchased the 16,000-acre coastal wildlife refuge known as Hobcaw Barony. When she died in 1964, she created a foundation through which the land is now used for research by colleges and universities.
