Gamecocks use late power surge in win over USC Upstate

COLUMBIA – The University of South Carolina baseball team scored five runs in the sixth, breaking a 3-all tie on its way to a 12-3 win over USC Upstate Tuesday night (March 3) at Founders Park. Nine of Carolina’s 12 runs came in its last three frames.

The Gamecocks got out early, scoring three runs on five hits with the big hit a KJ Scobey two-run double. Upstate scratched two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to tie the game at three.

Carolina opened the sixth with a pair of errors to put Scobey on third. He scored on Luke Yuhasz’s double to right. Aaron Jamison singled up the middle to make it 5-3 Carolina. Dawson Harman doubled in Jamison and Patrick Evans’ first home run of the game gave Carolina an 8-3 lead.

The Gamecocks scored three runs in the seventh with a two-run Logan Sutter blast and a Harman RBI groundout. Carolina ended the scoring in the eighth on Evans’ second home run of the game.

Evans was 4-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI while Yuhasz had three hits and two runs scored. Scobey and Ethan Lizama had two hits apiece.

Logan Prisco had his first start of the season and struck out five in four-plus innings, allowing two hits and an unearned run. Cooper Parks picked up the win, striking out a batter in a third of an inning.

POSTGAME NOTES

  • Carolina used seven pitchers on the night with Patrick Dudley closing out the game by going the final two innings.
  • Carolina had 16 hits on the night with eight players having at least one hit on the night.
  • Evans and Scobey each scored three runs in the win.
  • Carolina struck out 13 batters in the win.
