“Empowering girls through computer science” – ABC Columbia speaks with “Webgyrlz Code” during Midlands Gives

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — As Midlands Gives continues throughout Tuesday, ABC Columbia’s Lee Williams spoke with Executive Director Shambi Broome, about her nonprofit Webgyrlz Code.

Webgyrlz Code is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that focuses on computer science training for girls and women. Training includes web development using HTML & CSS, introduction to animation and game development with Scratch programming, and introduction to mobile app development. In-person classes are taught at various locations throughout South Carolina. Virtual coding classes are offered throughout the year.

The 18-hour giving challenge is underway now & ends at 11:59 p.m. tonight. According to the Central Carolina Community Foundation, more than $32 million has been raised for hundreds of non-profits across the Midlands since 2014.

The Foundation hosted its annual block party on Tuesday at Segra Park from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
