“My conscience is clear” — Massey delivers impassioned 47 minute speech before voting no on Congressional Redistricting
COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — SC Majority Leader Shane Massey delivered an impassioned speech before fellow Senators on Tuesday afternoon — voting no on an amendment that would allow for a special session to be called around Congressional Redistricting.
His speech followed a personal phone call with President Donald Trump the prior week, which Massey details in his speech, and also came after a social media plea from Trump Monday evening.
The post read, “The South Carolina State Senate has a big vote tomorrow on Redistricting. I’m watching closely, along with all Republicans across the Country who are counting on their Elected Leaders to use every Legal and Constitutional authority they have to stop the Radical Left Democrats from destroying our Country, including leveling the playing field against their decades of egregious Gerrymandering and Census Rigging. South Carolina Republicans: BE BOLD AND COURAGEOUS, just like the Republicans of the Great State of Tennessee were last week! Move the U.S. House Primaries to August, leave the rest on the same schedule. Everything will be fine. GET IT DONE! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”
But in the end, Massey says South Carolina is stronger with vibrant parties with a clash of ideas. He also says Republicans are stronger when the Democratic Party is vibrant and viable.
“Competition makes you better, y’all,” Massey says in his speech to fellow Senators.
The SC Senate’s final vote of 29-17 has left Congressional Redistricting much harder to come by — with now other legislators like Attorney General Alan Wilson calling on Governor Henry McMaster to call for a special session, which now only McMaster can do.
Massey explains he understands there are “likely consequences” for taking his position. Many feel he may face heavy backlash from Trump and other legislators. “I’ve got to look in the mirror. My conscience is clear on this one, y’all,” says Massey.
