COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — A commute home during Sunday night’s thunderstorm turned near-deadly for a Midlands mother and her three children, as they were trapped inside their SUV after a tree fell on it. Jonathan Bankhead says he’s grateful his wife and three children are okay after a tree fell on top of the truck they were riding in Sunday night. The children recount their mom slamming on brakes as the tree toppled and then kicking the door to try to escape. With the help of a driver who pulled up behind them, they were able to free themselves and exit the vehicle to safety. Fire officials say the family is very lucky to be alive, especially since downed power lines surrounded them.
