Black Hawk Helicopter Recovered

(WOLO) COLUMBIA,S.C., — ” This is the South Carolina National Guard, so this is everyday business.” But an emergency landing in this corn field near exit 2 adjacent to the interstate was not business as usual. in fact, officials with the national guard aviation say crews were lucky they were able to land where and when they did. ” as they climbed to 6 thousand feet they heard a loud bang in the aircraft and immediately felt it start vibrating. Initially it was moderate but quickly became severe… it was such a quick event all they had time to do was really rely on muscle memory for what to do. While crews are trained on how to deal with all types of scenarios – it’s when one actually hits that you are truly put to the test. one General Livingston says the pilot and crew of this black hawk passed with flying colors. ” the Black Hawk experienced mid flight rotor blade failure and pilots had to drop about 6 thousand feet per min. to land the aircraft….there’s very little damage from the landing. it was just a tremendous job by the pilot and his crew.” Just days later, responding crews are hoping recovery efforts would be as smooth as they brought in a chinook helicopter. A piece of equipment strong enough to pick up an artillery piece in order to whisk the aircraft off the ground and back to Mcintyre Air Force Base. an operation rare to say the least. ” I was just talking to a test pilot and he said he’s been in a black hawk unit for 18 years active duty and they’ve done it one time we’ve picked up about 5 black hawks overseas during the entire war so this is not a normal event.”
