Columbia , S.C. (WOLO) — The woman nominated to take charge of one of the state’s most embattled agencies cleared a hurdle on the way to approval. Tuesday morning, a Senate panel unanimously approved Susan Alford, Governor Haley’s nominee, to take over the Department of Social Services. “I feel great to receive the Senator’s support,” said Alford. ” They’re gonna be essential to me as I go forward to really be able to work on the reforms for the department.” Alford was picked by Governor Nikki Haley to replace former director, Lillian Koller, who resigned last year after calls for her removal. The department was shrouded in controversy following a Senate investigation that revealed child deaths, excessive caseloads, and high turnover. Tuesday, the senate panel grilled Alford with questions to make sure she is the best fit for the job. “At the end of the day, this is you running the agency and you’re going to do what’s best for South Carolina?” asked Sen. Joel Lourie. Alford said yes. She said she plans to address many issues the Department has faced over recent years by visiting each county. “I want to talk to them about staff turnover, about leadership in the department, their experiences, but I also need their input on what the critical needs are right now,” said Alford. The panel also addressed the issue of excessive caseloads and high employee turnover. Alford said both issues are her top priority if confirmed Director. “You have to get at keeping folks engaged with you, keeping them in the agency,” said Alford. “You have to get their caseloads manageable enough so they can do their jobs well.” Despite the many issues facing Alford, she said she knows the department can do better and she knows how to do it. Her selection will be considered by a full committee later this week.
