Orangeburg , SC (WOLO) — Wednesday a House subcommittee met to discuss the proposal for shutting down SC State University. Also Wednesday, the Legislative Black Caucus met, voting No Confidence in the school’s leadership. What does this mean for the school’s future? ABC Columbia News will be covering this story throughout the day. After a house-panel voted Tuesday to temporarily close South Carolina State University, students and faculty gathered on campus to express their emotions about the proposal. “I wanna make clear, South Carolina State will not close,” said President Thomas Elzey. Those are the words of South Carolina State President Thomas Elzey just hours after a house subcommittee voted to close the school for one year, to get it’s financial issues resolved. “The university has had it’s share of challenges,” said Elzey. “These problems that we have and that we’re facing right now didn’t happen overnight and they won’t go away overnight.” Hundreds of students, faculty, and alumni rallied behind the President outside the Martin Luther King Auditorium to fight for a school they love. “This institution has done a lot for me, not only for me but for my family so this is what I know, this is what I love, this is what I stand for,” said one SC State student. “I don’t know what I’m going to do because this band is my life, this school is my life, and I love the people here,” said Brittany Sandel. And it’s a fight they won’t give up. “This university will not close, the fight has just begun!” said National Alumni President Vernell Brown. “We’re going to stand strong on your behalf to support this university and with that we’re going to stand bulldog strong,” said President Elzey.
