Look at July 4th events around the Midlands
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) – It’s a time for parades, barbecues, fireworks and celebrating our nation’s independence. ABC Columbia wanted to give you a look at the local events, surrounding the Fourth of July: -Fort Jackson will celebrate America‘s independence, July 3, with a day of festivities starting at 8 a.m., with a 5K run/walk and a 12 and a half-mile bike ride at Hilton Field. There‘s an open house at the Fort Jackson Golf club at 9 a.m., and a Spades and Dominos tournament, bowling, miniature golf and the water park at 11 a.m. Standard fees apply to these activities. At 4 p.m., there will be kiddie rides and games on Hilton Field and the welcome starting at 6:30 p.m. Eric Mayweather will kick off the entertainment followed by Fort Jackson‘s 282nd “Rock Band.” This year‘s formal ceremony features the “Torchlight Tattoo” which is scheduled for 9 p.m., a cannon salute to each state of the United States, music by the 282nd Army Band, and a 30-minute fireworks display. -Celebrate Independence Day at Saluda Shoals Park with a Star Spangled Symphonic Salute concert featuring the Lake Murray Symphony Orchestra! The Symphony will perform a range of music from Broadway songs to patriotic music to sing-alongs! A food truck and Kona Ice will offer food for purchase. Ed’s Bartending will have beer and wine available for purchase. No coolers or alcoholic beverages. Pets are discouraged from the event area. Games, food, and activities will be available beginning at 7:00 p.m. The Lake Murray Symphony Orchestra performance will begin at 8:00 p.m. Remember to bring a picnic blanket or chair. -We wanted to make sure you knew about the upcoming Military Days at Carowinds on July 3-5. On those days, Carowinds will offer FREE park admission to all active, inactive or retired United States Service men and women with a valid military I.D. In addition, those with the military I.D. can also buy discounted tickets for family and friends at Fort Jackson. It‘s a small way for Carowinds to pay tribute to the brave military that has done so much for our country. -Bring the family out for a day of beach fun at the Capital City Beach Party on Saturday, July 4 at Finlay Park. The Capital City Beach Party will feature a sand volleyball exhibition, beach games, a limbo contest, karaoke, music from the Original Tams, fireworks and more! WHAT: Capital City Beach Party WHERE: Finlay Park, 930 Laurel Street WHEN: Saturday, July 4 from 2 to 10 p.m. (The Original Tams are scheduled to perform at 8 p.m. The fireworks show begins at 10 p.m.) COST: Admission to the Capital City Beach Party is FREE. There are fees for face painting, and food and craft vendors. Attendees are welcome to bring blankets or towels and beach chairs. No pets allowed. -Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott invites the community to the Richland County Sheriff‘s Department Memorial Event; in honor of Deputy Ryan Rawl. The Sheriff stated that the Richland County Sheriff‘s Department will host the Memorial Event on Saturday, July 4, 2015. The rally spot for the event will begin at 8:00 a.m. on the Sumter Street side of the Statehouse (1100 Gervais St, Columbia, SC 29201). The workout will begin at 8:30am with flights every few minutes that will carry participants around the Statehouse. The event honors the three-year anniversary of Ryan Davis Rawl‘s death and recognizes all those who serve and sacrifice for our freedom. Sheriff Leon Lott stated that teams of two will tackle the RCSD Memorial Event by embarking on a course that will take you through historical landmarks completing CrossFit-style challenges. The difficulty of the challenges will honor the stamina, dedication and sacrifice of our military heroes and completion will require a team effort. The distance and challenges will be sent out one week prior to the event so that participants will know what to expect, volunteers will also be placed throughout the course to help guide everyone. Water stations will also be placed along the course. Participants will be entering into a journey just as our soldiers and first responders do each time they are called upon! The CrossFit-style challenges can be scaled and modified to each participant‘s fitness ability and can be completed by ANYONE. The RCSD Memorial Event is family-friendly. Adult/child combo teams of any age are welcome and family/friends are happy to walk through the course alongside their team to watch and encourage them to the finish line. Registration is $20 per person, $40 per team. Participants must register by Wednesday, July 1st for the $20 registration fee; on-site registration will be $25. The flyover begins at 1 p.m. at Cherry Grove, S.C., and will continue along the coast to Hilton Head, S.C. Salute from the Shore is an annual flyover held on July 4 to salute and honor America’s armed forces. The flyover features vintage WWII aircraft and F-16s from the 20th Fighter Wing. For more details about the event, please see the official Salute from the Shore website at www.salutefromtheshore.org. -WHAT: In honor of the Fourth of July, Columbia Animal Shelter is teaming up with Richland and Lexington Counties to offer pet adoptions for $17.76 on July 4-7. All adoption fees include spay/neuter, microchip, Feline Leukemia/Heartworm Test, initial vaccines and deworming. WHERE: Columbia Animal Services, 127 Humane Lane, Columbia, SC and Lexington Animal Services, 321 Ball Park Rd, Lexington, SC WHEN: July 4-7 *Lexington Animal Services will be closed on July 4 and Columbia Animal Services will be closed on July 5. COST: $17.76 -On Saturday, July 4th In The Middle, a local non-profit organization dedicated to providing financial assistance to women undergoing treatment for breast cancer, will host a 5K Run and Family Fun Day at Irmo Community Park. The run will begin at 8:00am and the Family Fun Day will be held immediately following from 9:00am-2:00pm. There will be good food (including BBQ), great music and entertainment, and much more! WHAT: A 1,000 foot slip-and-slide party with live music, food, drinks and water. Attendees are encouraged to bring floaties and water toys. Tin Roof will be hosting the official after party. -The Washington Light Infantry will be sponsoring the 3rd annual reading of the Declaration of Independence on the steps of the Old Exchange Building at the foot of Broad Street, Charleston, SC, Saturday, July 4th 2015, 9:30 am. -ROCKIN‘ RED, WHITE & BLUE CELEBRATION: The Town of Blythewood will host its 2015 “Rockin’ Red, White & Blue Celebration” on Friday, July 3, at Doko Meadows (rain or shine). New this year is WWE wrestling from 3 to 5 PM, and the D.B. Bryant Band is back on stage from 6 to 9 PM. Fireworks will start at 9 PM! Local food vendors will be on hand with plenty of picnic food. Bring your lawn chairs (no coolers please) and your family for a fun-filled night! Admission is free! -Get ready for the 26th Annual 4th of July Celebration on Lake Murray on Saturday, July 4th!! CCLMC is trying to break our all-time record this year with over 150 boats and inclusion within the Guinness Book of World Records! We hope that you and your family will join us and participate to make this a special year! -Boat Parade Info Parade will be held on Saturday, July 4th, 2015 beginning at 12 noon at Bomb Island and heading toward the Dam. Registration is open today through June 25th! Entries received between June 23-28th will be accepted. But information packets must be picked up at the Lake Murray Visitor Center.
