Bill to Remove Confederate Flag Passes Second Reading

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO)– A bill calling for the removal of the confederate flag from state house grounds has passed a second reading by a vote of 37-3. The senate will reconvene Tuesday at 10am. The measure must now pass a third reading by a two thirds majority. After nearly 3 hours of debate, the South Carolina Senate continues discussions on the Confederate Flag. Among Monday’s debate a number of lawmakers took to the podium to propose amendments. Senator Lee Bright proposed an amendment that would fly the “stars and bars” the National Flag of the Confederacy outside on State House grounds. Senator Joel Lourie told Senators in his opinion the flag should not fly on State House grounds. Senator Verdins amendment asked for the Confederate Flag to only be raised on Confederate Memorial Day.
