Nikki Haley becomes SC governor

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — Nikki Haley has been sworn in as Governor of South Carolina.

Governor Nikki Haley won the office back in November 2010 against State Senator Vincent Sheheen.

Despite the snow and ice that covered the Midlands earlier this week, the inauguration continues on as scheduled on the South side of the State House.

The day’s Inaugural activities began at 9 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, across from the State House.  During the service, dignitaries and others gathered for a prayer service preceding the swearing-in ceremony.  Many constitutional officers were in attendance.

The Inaugural took place beginning at 11 a.m. on the south side of the State House.  Around 12:25 p.m., Governor Haley was sworn in by South Carolina Chief Justice Jean Toal.  The other constitutional officers were sworn in earlier in the ceremony.

Those in attendance had a bit of a scare when one of the troopers collapsed during the processional.  The trooper was treated on site, and reports indicate he will be okay.

Governor Haley spoke after being sworn in, speaking the importance of the power of the people, working together with one vision, which she says is focused on businesses and families and away from partisan politics.

The Inaugural activities continue with an open house at the Governor’s Mansion at 2 p.m., and the Inaugural Gala takes place Wednesday night.
