Spartanburg may close city pool, rec center
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — Spartanburg plans a public meeting to discuss whether the city should close its indoor swimming pool and a community center.
The Herald-Journal of Spartanburg reports (http://bit.ly/AtJ6Bd ) that the city wants to build a recreation center on the fast-growing north side of town and wants to help pay for it by shutting the T.K Gregg Recreation Center and Swim Center, which is an indoor pool built nearly four decades ago.
Officials say about 2,000 people visit the Swim Center monthly, and about two-thirds are not city residents. The recreation center gets about 400 visitors.
Both locations will need costly repairs to stay open over the next five years.
