Mayor: Myrtle Beach economy on rise

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) — Myrtle Beach Mayor John Rhodes says the city’s economy is improving and the resort has emerged from the Great Recession in good shape.

Rhodes delivered his annual State of the City address Tuesday.

The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reports (http://bit.ly/GBT0AP) the mayor praised local businesses and organizations for organizing festival and events to attract visitors during the spring and fall.

Rhodes also discussed recent accomplishments such as the city’s boardwalk that has boosted development along Ocean Boulevard and attracted new businesses.

He also says the city’s sports-tourism is growing. A new sports complex near the popular Market Common shopping and residential complex will allow the city to host soccer, baseball, softball and other tournaments.

Myrtle Beach is the heart of South Carolina’s $14 billion tourism industry.
