Bill says temp substitutes can’t get unemployment
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The South Carolina House has approved a bill barring contracted substitute teachers from receiving unemployment benefits during school breaks.
The House voted 104-1 Tuesday for a bill clarifying that substitutes hired through a temporary agency are ineligible for jobless benefits.
Labor Commerce and Industry Committee Chairman Bill Sandifer of Seneca says the issue has come up in a handful of school districts. Sandifer says the contracted substitutes sought to collect unemployment during summer and winter breaks.
The bill requires another vote before heading to the Senate.
