Friend of suspected church shooter pleads not guilty

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — Joey Meek, a friend of the alleged Charleston church shooter pleaded not guilty during his first court appearance Friday.
Friends and family of Meek arrived at the courthouse Friday morning.
Meek, 21, was arrested Thursday, and has been charged with misprison of a felony and making false statements to FBI investigators according to court documents.
For misprison of a felony the maximum penalty is 3 years imprisonment, $250,000 fine & supervised release of 1 year.
For false statement charge, the maximum penalty is 5 years imprisonment, $250,000 fine, supervised release 3 years.
Bond has been set at $100,000.
Authorities notified Meek last month they had begun investigating him for lying to investigators and failing to report a crime.
Meek has said Dylann Roof, the alleged church shooter, stayed with him before the June 17 shootings at Emmanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.
