Woman shot, officer injured in attempted shoplifting and car chase

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WPDE) — A woman has been taken into custody after she ran from police during an attempted shoplifting at Walmart, according to Lt. Raul Denis, with Horry County police. The incident started at 10:30 a.m. at the Walmart on S.C. 544 The woman was able to get in her car, but an officer tried to grab her. During the struggle, the woman was able to start her car, but the officer was stuck in the door and was partially dragged. Lt. Denis said the officer was able to fire a shot at the suspect and did wound her. Her injury is not life threatening, Denis added. The officer that was dragged was injured and is in the hospital. His condition has not been released. The woman was able get away and led police on a chase from the Walmart on S.C. 544 to 37th Avenue North and North Kings Highway in Myrtle Beach where she was apprehended. Denis said she was believed to be unarmed during the incident. However, she may have other charges against her, Denis added. Denis said the woman is from Sumter. The State Law Enforcement Division will take over the investigation.
